Healthy eating diets are one of the best ways to approach a successful weight loss attempt.

Sure, exercise is important as a way to boost your metabolism and burn calories, but the calories you take in on a daily basis can really be the difference between shedding extra pounds, staying even or even gaining weight.

Unfortunately, there are hidden (or forgotten) calories in almost everyone’s diet. A perfect example is calories that are consumed by the way of beverages like sodas which are packed with sugar.

This sugar laden beverage is easily stored as fat if the calories it contains aren’t burned off through the course of a day. Although these calories might not seem like much individually, collectively they can be disastrous to someone that really wants to lose weight. If you’re trying to implement a healthier lifestyle, you’d be well served to seriously restrict (or eliminate) soda from your diet altogether. Try to replace these sugary beverages with clean drinking water, instead.

Remember, one pound of excess weight is equal to 3,500 calories!

Other healthy eating diet tips:

1. Try to avoid or limit processed foods. Processed foods are great in a pinch, but their ease of preparation also means that they contain chemicals and other agents to preserve it and flavorings to make it taste better. The golden rule of thumb – if it comes in a bag or a box, check the ingredients. If the food is made of words that you can’t pronounce, don’t eat it.

2. Increase how many fruits and vegetables you eat. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recommends that Americans eat 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruit daily. For maximum health benefits your vegetables shouldn’t be deep fried (think french fry) and are best if eaten raw or slightly heated, since cooking removes a lot of the vital nutrients the plant is supposed to supply. Garden salads and cut up celery, carrots, cucumbers are great ways to eat smart and are low in calories.

3. Limit your consumption of red meat and other fatty meats. Steaks, burgers and bacon might taste terrific but they pack a lot of calories. Processed meats like bacon might also contain nitrates, a known carcinogen. Instead, choose boneless, skinless chicken breast, turkey or fish – or just avoid meat altogether and eat more vegetables instead. The consumption of red meat has been tied to cases of colon and other cancers, so this change in the way you eat could end up having additional health benefits.

Making changes is never easy, so if it’s too difficult for you to radically uproot your habits, just try and focus on one thing at a time. For example – drink more water for two or three weeks and once you’ve made that a habit, tackle the next thing on your list.. chances are you’ll be more successful if you cross each bridge as you come to it.

I hope that these healthy eating diet tips help you get started on the road to a better way of life!

It’s that time of the year when again when the average person wants to let loose and really celebrate. Often, that means over-indulging in both food and drink. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the most popular holidays, and are known for the delicious food and festive times. But, if ever there’s a time where a person can gain weight, it’s now!

If you’re struggling with a weight problem and you’d like to keep yourself from going overboard during the Holiday season, keep in mind you’ll need some serious discipline to maintain your goals. If not, you might just go overboard like everybody else and end up tempted to just overeat because you can always ‘make a New Year’s resolution’ and deal with the problem in 2010.

1.) Let yourself go on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Go ahead and indulge on the two big Holidays of the year. You deserve it.

2.) Don’t go crazy every weekend that isn’t a Holiday. Keep your diet in check and continue exercising, even if everybody else is feeling festive. If you want to lose weight, realize it’s hard work and you’ll have to keep giving it your all.

3.) Don’t underestimate how many calories are in alcoholic beverages. When it comes to drinking, a little goes a long way.

4.) Don’t feel alone. Most of the modern world is now struggling with a weight problem, so don’t feel singled out just because you’re being extra aware of your food consumption around the Holidays. So are billions of other people worldwide!

5.) Enjoy yourself. Don’t let the holidays be a time of stress.

6.) Enjoy the company you keep. The Holidays are a time to re-unite with loved ones.

When all is said and done, you can easily survive the Holiday seasons just by reminding yourself to be moderate most of the time, but don’t be afraid to let your hair down and enjoy the actual holidays.

One thing is certain, if you can continue to be diligent for the next few months, it will give you a big boost when New Year’s rolls around. You’ll already have been working on your goals, and will be way ahead of people who have been partying due to the season.

Key point: A multitude of data has shown that patients with moderate cardiovascular risk factors, peripheral arterial disease, or diabetes who were given a daily aspirin for primary prevention had minimal to no reductions in cardiovascular morbidity or mortality and were at an increased risk for bleeding.

Finer points: An editorial published by Mori Krantz, MD, and colleagues reviewed the evidence on the use of aspirin therapy for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients who had not experienced a previous coronary or cerebrovascular event. The authors reviewed a meta-analysis of six trials (n = 95,456) assessing the benefits and risks of aspirin therapy for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in men and women. The analyses found that aspirin use resulted in a 12% reduction in cardiovascular events in women, primarily driven by a reduction in ischemic strokes, and a 14% reduction in men, primarily driven by a reduction in myocardial infarctions. However, these patients had no significant reductions in cardiovascular mortality and were at a significantly higher increased risk of bleeding (68% to 72%).

In a review of data from four publications involving patients with peripheral arterial disease, researchers concluded that use of aspirin therapy for primary prevention had no benefit on reducing cardiovascular morbidity or mortality. In addition, one trial observed an increased risk of major bleeding among patients given aspirin. Data on the use of aspirin therapy in patients with diabetes have also failed to demonstrate a convincing cardioprotective effect. “Unless a patient has coronary or cerebrovascular disease, the available data do not justify routine use of aspirin in patients based solely on a moderate risk level … Further research regarding optimal antiplatelet therapy is clearly warranted for patients with peripheral arterial disease [and] diabetes and those at risk for atherosclerosis,” wrote the authors.

What you need to know: This editorial highlighted how patients may be swayed by false advertising about the cardioprotective effects of aspirin. Patients need to understand that the current evidence does not support the use of aspirin therapy for primary prevention in patients at moderate risk. In addition, patients should be educated on strategies proven to reduce cardiovascular events such as reductions in lipid levels and blood pressure, smoking cessation, and weight control through diet and exercise.

What your patients need to know: Counsel patients that daily aspirin therapy has been shown to be cardioprotective for patients with established cardiovascular disease; however, the benefits of aspirin for primary prevention require further study. Counsel them on lifestyle modifications that have been shown to be heart healthy such as a low-fat diet, increased physical activity, and smoking cessation. If patients choose to use aspirin, inform them that they are at an increased risk of bleeding.

Scientists report that breast cancer risk assessment models, which predict a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer, do not perform better when they include common inherited genetic variants recently linked to the disease. Therefore, recommendations for breast cancer screening or treatments will remain unchanged for most women. The study, led by investigators from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, appears in the March 18, 2010, New England Journal of Medicine.

“In the past three years, genome-wide association studies have identified multiple common genetic variants associated with breast cancer. The extent to which adding these variants to existing models could improve clinical recommendations had not been tested in a large population of women prior to this study,” said Sholom Wacholder, Ph.D., senior investigator in NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG). “When we included these newly discovered genetic factors, we found some improvement in the performance of risk models for breast cancer, but it was not enough improvement to matter for the great majority of women.”

Findings from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to date have pinpointed several locations in the human genome, called single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), where genetic variation is associated with cancer risk. SNPs are the most common type of variation, affecting just a single building block of DNA. SNPs are used in GWAS to identify chromosome regions that are associated with disease. Studies to characterize the biologic effects of the variants associated with breast cancer are now being conducted to help clarify their role in breast cancer risk.

To test whether genetic information from recent genome-wide association studies would increase the value of breast cancer risk models, Wacholder and colleagues combined data from five studies: the Nurses’ Health Study; the Womens’ Health Initiative Observational Study; the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort; the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial; and the Polish Breast Cancer Study, in order to provide more reliable and accurate estimates than those available from any single study. These studies, altogether, included 5,590 breast cancer patients and 5,998 women without cancer. The women were predominately white and between the ages of 50 and 79. The team assembled information for each participant on established risk factors and on the 10 SNPs recently found to be associated with breast cancer risk in analyses of GWAS.

Next, the investigators examined the predictive accuracy of the Gail model — the most commonly used breast cancer risk model — for this group of women. The Gail model uses information on a woman’s own personal medical and reproductive history, as well as the history of breast cancer among her first-degree relatives (mother, sisters, and children) to estimate her risk of developing invasive breast cancer within the next five years, or over her lifetime. The investigators then tested the accuracy of a SNP model and found that it was as good as the Gail model alone. An inclusive model, using both SNPs and Gail factors, performed only slightly better than either model alone.

For most women in the study, the inclusive model did not substantially change their personal estimated risk of developing breast cancer beyond the Gail model calculations. Overall, using the inclusive model reclassified 26 percent of women to a higher risk category; 28 percent to a lower risk category; and left 46 percent in the same category of risk score. The shifts from one category to another were generally too small to influence clinical decision-making.

The authors emphasized that the genome-wide association studies represent an early stage in our understanding of the inherited components of breast cancer risk. “We can expect to identify more genetic determinants of breast cancer, and to learn more about those we have already found,” said Wacholder. “This information, along with our increasing knowledge of non-genetic factors, should allow us to steadily improve our risk prediction models for breast cancer.”

These days, a lot of people are realizing the significance of taking vitamin supplements. They’re considered to be most important for us since if we are not going to take adequate vitamins necessary for our bodies, these vitamin supplements can play an alternative role and fulfil the shortage of the quantity of vitamins in our system. If you’re feeling sluggish or otherwise unhealthy, you will want to consider adding vitamin supplements to your daily regimen. Several diets are bereft of a big variety of the essential nutrients that your body wants in order to be happy and health, and the simple addition of some vitamin supplements after your meals will allow you to eat the foods that you enjoy and still get all of the necessities for a healthy physiognomy. Even if you are consciously steering your diet towards healthy, vitamin rich meals, amino acids are still terribly common deficiencies in several individuals, significantly in vegetarians or vegans as it is extraordinarily troublesome to put along a tasty meal that includes all of the essential amino acids. Because many of the amino acids are exclusive to certain sorts of food, it’s easier for a person to spot some amino acids that are normally missing from their diet because of their food decisions and take supplements to account for them. These supplements are all ecological and compatible with a vegetarian diet, so even the acids found only in meat are obtainable to anyone who eats vegetarian. Essential fatty acids are another common part missing from many diets. As many of these are found exclusively in lipid wealthy foods, like fish that could be a rare meal even for omnivores, getting the full complement of the necessary fatty acids can be a difficult task through meals alone. Preparing these foods is usually time consuming and laborious, thus sadly many folks unknowingly go without these fatty acids in their diets. This can lead to the body utilizing alternative ‘replacement’ fatty acids in lieu of people who it’d usually use for certain tasks inside the body, and this can be a very energy intensive method that can leave someone feeling drained or tired. Merely adding omega 3 through six fatty acid supplements to your diet will improve your mood drastically if you’re deficient and will get your body back heading in the right direction while leaving you feeling much a lot of energetic than before. Different essential vitamin supplements like D, E, and K also are terribly useful as a result of though they are often found in diets, they’re not typically consumed within the recommended amounts. So a straight forward supplement can help you gain the positive effects that these vitamins will confer on your physique.

Many people believe that eating a well balanced diet provides all the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health. In ideal circumstances, this is the case, but in reality there are many reasons why you may need vitamin supplements to cope with living in the twentieth century environment. Taking vitamins when required is a safe method of optimizing your dietary sources of nutrients, providing you follow the instructions on product labels.

1. Poor Digestion

Even when your food intake is good, inefficient digestion can limit your body’s uptake of vitamins. Some common causes of inefficient digestion are not chewing well enough and eating too fast. Both of these result in larger than normal food particle size, too large to allow complete action of digestive enzymes. Many people with dentures are unable to chew as efficiently as those with a full set of original teeth.

2. Hot Coffee, Tea and Spices

Habitual drinking of liquids that are too hot, or consuming an excess of irritants such as coffee, tea or pickles and spices can cause inflammation of the digestive linings, resulting in a drop in secretion of digestive fluids and poorer extraction of vitamins and minerals from food.

3. Alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol is known to damage the liver and pancreas which are vital to digestion and metabolism. It can also damage the lining of the intestinal tract and adversely affect the absorption of nutrients, leading to sub-clinical malnutrition. Regular heavy use of alcohol increases the body’s need for the B-group vitamins, particularly thiamine, niacin, pyridoxine, folic acid and vitamins B12, A and C as well as the minerals zinc, magnesium and calcium. Alcohol affects availability, absorption and metabolism of nutrients.

4. Smoking

Smoking too much tobacco is also an irritant to the digestive tract and increases the metabolic requirements of Vitamin C, all else being equal, by at least 30mg per cigarette over and above the typical requirements of a non-smoker. Vitamin C which is normally present in such foods as paw paws, oranges and capsicums, oxidizes rapidly once these fruits are cut, juiced, cooked or stored in direct sunlight or near heat. Vitamin C is important to the immune function.

5. Laxatives

Overuse of laxatives can result in poor absorption of vitamins and minerals from food, by hastening the intestinal transit time. Paraffin and other mineral oils increase losses of fat soluble vitamins A, E and K. Other laxatives used to excess can cause large losses of minerals such as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

6. Fad Diets

Bizarre diets that miss out on whole groups of foods can be seriously lacking in vitamins. Even the popular low fat diets, if taken to an extreme, can be deficient in vitamins A, D and E. Vegetarian diets, which can exclude meat and other animal sources, must be very skillfully planned to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency, which may lead to anemia.

7. Overcooking

Lengthy cooking or reheating of meat and vegetables can oxidize and destroy heat susceptible vitamins such as the B-group, C and E. Boiling vegetables leaches the water soluble vitamins B-group and C as well as many minerals. Light steaming is preferable. Some vitamins, such as vitamin B6 can be destroyed by irradiation from microwaves.

8. Food Processing

Freezing food containing vitamin E can significantly reduce its levels once defrosted. Foods containing vitamin E exposed to heat and air can turn rancid. Many common sources of vitamin E, such as bread and oils are nowadays highly processed, so that the vitamin E content is significantly reduced or missing totally, which increases storage life but can lower nutrient levels. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which defensively inhibits oxidative damage to all tissues. Other vitamin losses from food processing include vitamin B1 and C.

9. Convenience Foods

A diet overly dependent on highly refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, white flour and white rice, places greater demand on additional sources of B-group vitamins to process these carbohydrates. An unbalanced diet contributes to such conditions as irritability, lethargy and sleep disorders.

10. Antibiotics

Some antibiotics although valuable in fighting infection, also kill off friendly bacteria in the gut, which would normally be producing B-group vitamins to be absorbed through the intestinal walls. Such deficiencies can result in a variety of nervous conditions, therefore it may be advisable to supplement with B-group vitamins when on a lengthy course of broad spectrum antibiotics.

11. Food Allergies

The omission of whole food groups from the diet, as in the case of individuals allergic to gluten or lactose, can mean the loss of significant dietary sources of nutrients such as thiamine, riboflavin or calcium.

12. Crop Nutrient Losses

Some agricultural soils are deficient in trace elements. Decades of intensive agriculture can overwork and deplete soils, unless all the soil nutrients, including trace elements, are regularly replaced. This means that food crops can be depleted of nutrients due to poor soil management. In one U.S Government survey, levels of essential minerals in crops were found to have declined by up to 68 per cent over a four year period in the 1970’s.

13. Accidents and Illness

Burns lead to a loss of protein and essential trace nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Surgery increases the need for zinc, vitamin E and other nutrients involved in the cellular repair mechanism. The repair of broken bones will be retarded by an inadequate supply of calcium and vitamin C and conversely enhanced by a full dietary supply. The challenge of infection places high demand on the nutritional resources of zinc, magnesium and vitamins B5, B6 and zinc.

14. Stress

Chemical, physical and emotional stresses can increase the body’s requirements for vitamins B2, B5, B6 and C. Air pollution increases the requirements for vitamin E.

15. P.M.T

Research has demonstrated that up to 60 per cent of women suffering from symptoms of premenstrual tension, such as headaches, irritability, bloated ness, breast tenderness, lethargy and depression can benefit from supplementation with vitamin B6.

16. Teenagers

Rapid growth spurts such as in the teenage years, particularly in girls, place high demands on nutritional resources to underwrite the accelerated physical, biochemical and emotional development in this age group. Data from the USA Ten State Nutrition Survey (in 1968-70 covering a total of 24,000 families and 86,000 individuals) showed that between 30-50 per cent of adolescents aged 12-16 had dietary intakes below two thirds of the recommended daily averages for Vitamin A, C, calcium and iron.

17. Pregnant Women

Pregnancy creates higher than average demands for nutrients, to ensure healthy growth of the baby and comfortable confinement for the mother. Nutrients which typically require increase during pregnancy are the B-group, especially B1, B2, B3, B6, folic acid and B12, A, D, E and the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and phosphorous.

The Ten State Nutrition Survey in the USA in 1968-70 showed that as many as 80 per cent of the pregnant women surveyed had dietary intakes below two thirds of recommended daily allowances. Professional assessment of nutrient requirements during pregnancy should be sought.

18. Oral Contraceptives

Oral Contraceptives can decrease absorption of folic acid and increase the need for vitamin B6, and possibly vitamin C, zinc and riboflavin. Approximately 22 per cent of Australian women aged 15-44 are believed to be on “the pill” at any one time.

19. Light Eaters

Some people eat very sparingly, even without weight reduction goals. US dietary surveys have shown that an average woman maintains her weight on 7560 kilojoules per day, at which level her diet is likely to be low in thiamine, calcium and iron.

20. The Elderly

The aged have been shown to have a low intake of vitamins and minerals, particularly iron, calcium and zinc. Folic acid deficiency is often found, in conjunction with vitamin C deficiency. Fibre intake is often low. Riboflavin (B2) and pyridoxine (B6) deficiencies have also been observed. Possible causes include impaired sense of taste and smell, reduced secretion of digestive enzymes, chronic disease and, maybe, physical impairment.

21. Lack of Sunlight

Invalids, shift workers and people whose exposure to sunlight may be minimal can suffer from insufficient amounts of vitamin D, which is required for calcium metabolism, without which rickets and osteoporosis (bone thinning) has been observed. Ultraviolet light is the stimulus to vitamin D formation in skin. It is blocked by cloud, fog, smog, smoke, ordinary window glass, curtains and clothing. The maximum recommended daily supplement intake of vitamin D is 400 i.u.

22. Bio-Individuality

Wide fluctuations in individual nutrient requirements from the official recommended average vitamin and mineral intakes are common, particularly for those in high physical demand vocations, such as athletics and manual labor, taking into account body weight and physical type. Protein intake influences the need for vitamin B6 and vitamin B1 is linked to kilo joule intake.

23. Low Body Reserves

Although the body is able to store reserves of certain vitamins such as A and E, Canadian autopsy data has shown that up to thirty percent of the population have reserves of vitamin A so low as to be judged “at risk”. Vitamin A is important to healthy skin and mucous membranes (including the sinus and lungs) and eyesight.

24. Athletes

Athletes consume large amounts of food and experience considerable stress. These factors affect their needs for B-group vitamins, vitamin C and iron in particular. Tests on Australian Olympic athletes and A-grade football players, for example, have shown wide ranging vitamin deficiencies.

Many factors contribute to the renewed concern about food safety. Agriculture and food processing have grown enormously in scale, and foods are shipped great distances. Contamination in one place can produce distant illnesses, making it difficult to recognize an outbreak quickly and track down its source.

In the United States each year, there are 76 million food-borne infections. Of these, 350,000 are serious enough to require hospitalization, and 5,000 are deadly. Prevention is, of course, the best way to fight back. The Harvard Men’s Health Watch article, the first in a two-part series, emphasizes two types of prevention efforts:

Food safety reform. The USDA is responsible for the safety of meat, poultry, and processed eggs, while the FDA supervises most other foods. But these agencies, as well as others in the mix, are severely underfunded and ill-equipped for the globalization of our food supply. Although we now import 15% of our food (including 60% of our fruits and vegetables and 75% of our seafood), just 1% of these imports are inspected. Reform is needed on the federal, state, and local levels, along with full cooperation of the private sector, including importers, farmers, ranchers, and the food processing industry.

Food irradiation. Irradiation uses energy from ionizing radiation to kill the microbes in food; the food that emerges is not radioactive, and it retains its flavor, appearance, and nutritional value. Food irradiation is approved in more than 40 countries, including the United States, but it is rarely used in America. Decades-long experience with animals and people (including astronauts) who have eaten irradiated food has not revealed any increased risk. Consumers will always have the freedom to choose, since all irradiated foods are labeled as such, but a shift in mindset could save lives: the CDC estimates that irradiating just half of the meat and poultry consumed in the United States would eliminate 900,000 cases of food-borne illnesses and prevent 352 deaths in a year.

All the recent talk about health care reform has me thinking about an article I read last year about who pays for health care. So let’s begin with a question; namely, who do you think pays for health care? Is it employers? The government? Insurance companies? Individuals? If you’re like most Americans, you probably believe that employers pay the bulk of their workers’ insurance premiums and that governments pay for Medicare and Medicaid (and some will remember to add in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program – SCHIP). Some of you will no doubt believe that insurance companies pay for a lot of our health care since that’s where so many of the bills seem to go. In actuality, according to the article I read in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the answer is that it’s individuals and households who pay for the entire health care bill. Moreover, failure to understand this fundamental fact perpetuates the myth that we can all get great health benefits paid for by someone else. Real health care reform is impossible until we realize that the money is all coming from our own pockets.

The article was entitled “Who Really Pays for Health Care” and it was authored by Drs. Ezekiel Emanuel and Victor Fuchs of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Economics at Stanford University, respectively. You may recognize Dr. Emanuel as being the older brother White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. (Dr. Emanuel also currently serves as an advisor to the White House on health care policy, but according to an article in The New York Times, he got the job on his own without his brother’s influence.)

But let’s return to the question of who pays for health care? First of all, insurance companies don’t pay for anything. They are simply for-profit middlemen who actually skim off money from the health care system in return for processing claims and handling all that money. Clearly, health insurance companies are not charities and are out to make a profit after they do whatever work it is they do. They get their money from somewhere else.

Most people understand that the insurance companies get their money from employers and from individuals. In fact, individuals pay for it all, as I’ll explain. First, it’s obvious that we pay for our portion of the health insurance premiums. If we’re unemployed or if our employer doesn’t offer health insurance benefits then it’s clear that we pay for the entire insurance bill. But that’s only the beginning. Whoever pays for the insurance, we still pay out of pocket for co-pays, both for doctor visits and for medication. Typically, however, it’s only the out-of-pocket costs that get our attention because we tend to forget that we’ve also contributed a lot towards the insurance premiums. That’s because those payments are separated from the delivery of care. Either they are taken as withholdings` from our paycheck, which means they are nearly completely hidden, or they are paid in the form of premium notices, which means that they seem to be going for insurance when in fact they are going for health care. It’s a psychological, but extremely important, distinction.

More importantly, however, is for us to understand that our employers are simply fooling us into believing that they are paying for part of the insurance. In fact, health care benefits come directly at the expense of reduced wages. Although space does not allow me fully to prove this point, Drs. Emanuel and Fuchs state that “Employers’ contribution to the health insurance premium is really workers’ compensation in another form. Rather than coming out of corporate profits, the increasing cost of health care has resulted in relatively flat real wages for 30 years. That is the health care cost-wage trade off.” And, “The health care cost-wage trade-off is confirmed by many economic studies.” Further, “In a review of studies on the link between health care costs and wages, Gruber concluded, ‘The results [of studies] that attempt to control for worker selection, firm selection, or (ideally) both have produced a fairly uniform result: the costs of health insurance are fully shifted to wages.’” (italics mine)

We can see then that we pay for our own portion of insurance premiums directly and we pay for the company’s portion indirectly, through reduced wages. Which leaves government as a potential payment source for health care. But clearly governments pay for things either by taxing current citizens, borrowing from future taxpayers (by creating deficits) or by reducing other services. We all pay for government-sponsored health care through our tax dollars! That’s the direct cost. But the indirect cost is the reduced services that must be cut in favor of health care spending. And one of the biggest areas of cuts, particularly for states, is publicly funded higher education. As the doctors note in the JAMA article, “In other words, the increasing cost of Medicaid and other government health care programs are a primary reason for the substantial increase in tuition and fees for state colleges and universities. Middle-class families finding it more difficult to pay for their children’s college are unwittingly falling victim to increasing state health care costs. Not an easy – but a necessary – connection to make.”

The reason I think it’s so important for all of us to realize that we, not employers, not insurance companies, not the government, are paying for health care is that until we do we cannot have meaningful health care reform. Sure we can make some changes here and there, perhaps even get universal insurance coverage, but the more fundamental problem is out-of-control health care expenses. As David Brooks recently wrote in The New York Times, “Over the past few decades, health care inflation has exceeded the general rise in prices by about 2.5 percent a year. These inexorably rising costs are bankrupting the nation, walloping businesses and squeezing middle-class salaries. The basic problem is that the American people have gotten used to high-tech, all-everything health care, under the illusion that they don’t have to pay for it and that it’s always better for them.”

In fact, we do have to pay for it and are paying for it. Step one of real health care reform is for us fully to embrace that fact. For example, if you had to pay out of pocket for your health care can you imagine the difference in services that you’d demand to receive? Would you automatically expect the newest most expensive test, treatment, or medication? Or would you be more likely to ask for those tests that were absolutely necessary, for the most cost-effective treatments, and for generic medications whenever possible? Our current system is not designed to look for such cost efficiencies. And that’s because we all think someone else is paying the bill. The next time your doctor orders tests, recommends treatments, and prescribes medications, think for a moment what you’d say if you had to write a check for those items. I doubt you’d say: “Sure doctor, whatever you say.”

Cannabis Science Inc. (NASD OTCBB: CBIS), a pharmaceutical cannabis company, is pleased to report to their shareholders that the choice of our initial cannabis-based pharmaceutical for FDA clinical trials has been made. The Company has reported several possible drugs for FDA clinical trials. Based on extensive studies, the Company has decided to contract with a group based in Colorado to handle the Company’s FDA filings. Appropriate announcements will be made when the contracts are finalized.

Dr. Robert Melamede, President & CEO Cannabis Science Inc., stated, “We have made great progress and this is just the beginning. We are in the final stages before Cannabis Science files with the FDA for clinical trials. There is a massive amount of Cannabis research that is available. Cannabis is one of the only drugs that have little or no negative side effects when used medically. We will request that the FDA consider this and other facts when examining our application. We have a great team of FDA experts and scientific minds to make sure that every step we take is inline with FDA requirements”

Richard Cowan, Cannabis Science Inc., CFO & Director stated, “We have decided to give this interim report due to the overwhelming interest we have been receiving in the US and around the World from existing and potential investors. In the next few days we will announce more specifics regarding our first FDA application.”

Cannabis Science has accomplished and will be announcing shortly several critical steps to determine its FDA protocols and drug submission:

Ayurveda recognizes 2 types of allergies -– one that are caused by genetic predisposition (which means an individual is born with it). It can be a sensitivity to allergens in the enviornment or it can be an allergy to a specific food. For anyone suffering from allergies from birth, the best approach would be to consult a legitimate Ayurvedic practitioner who will conduct an extensive exam and, based on the results, suggest possible treatments and lifestyle changes that will have to be implemented on the road to recovery. It is not recommended to try treating yourself or your loved ones without a consultation or examination.

The other type of allergy that Ayurveda recognizes is the seasonal allergy. Runny nose, sneezing and sniffling, itchy eyes, congestion and a pile of Kleenex — bigger then Mount Everest –- all of these are symptoms you might be suffering from seasonal allergies.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Allergies and Allergy Symptoms

Unlike other traditional practices Ayurveda considers pollen and dust secondary causes of allergies, as a great number of people are exposed to them daily and still do not have an allergic reaction. According to Ayurveda, seasonal allergies are caused by ama in the body (when food is not properly digested this incompletely digested food stays in the body and it is called ama). Ama is considered toxic in Ayurveda. It travels through the circulatory system and it can get stuck in different parts of the body and body tissue. That in turn activates the immune system that goes into overdrive. In springtime that is a period rife with environmental allergens it does not take much for the immune system to react and cause an allergic attack.

What can be done so you can enjoy nature again?

Even before the period of seasonal allergies starts you might want to consider purifying and detoxifying your body through any type of cleansing process which can be either done at home or in an Ayurveda treatment center. If you decide to do it at home it would be wise to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before you undertake it.

Since the main cause of seasonal allergies is ama, it is necessary to change the diet habits. Ayurveda suggests having the heaviest meal of the day during lunchtime and having the lightest possible meal in the evening. The logic behind is that our digestion is at its best during the height of the day. In the evenings meals should be light, as heavy food can result in even more blockage.

Food that should be avoided is anything heavy – especially dairy products, nuts or meat. Another thing that might help with easing the symptoms of allergies is to avoid sour and acidic foods as these foods can aggravate the inflammation further.

Exercise in the mornings and stick to a routine in life as it will make the immune system more stable and less prone to reactions.

Go to sleep at 10pm. This is optimal time for quality sleep, but also this is the time body goes through a natural rejuvenation cycle. If you go to bed later detoxifying process will be compromised and you will not be getting rid of the toxins that cause the allergies in the first place.

Leftovers and cold food should be avoided because both of these are more difficult to digest.

Spices that can help are tumeric (it has a balancing effect on the immune system and is anti-allergenic), ginger (clears up ama), fenell (for balance) and coriander (for detoxifying purposes).

Yoga practices and meditation should not be ignored if you suffer from allergies as they have balancing effects on both mind and the body.

Other Information

Ayurveda also distinguishes three types of allergies, identified according to the doshas, and each has its own remedy.

Kapha allergies are associated with congestion and Ayurvedic remedy would include following a recommended liquid diet one day a week and drinking warm water with a half a teaspoon of licorice.

Vata allergies have a symptom of excessive dryness and it can be helped by having ginger tea during the day.

Pitta allergies have a symptom of inflammation of sinuses it can be helped by a cup of warm milk mixed with a half-teaspoon of tumeric powder.
